Gate valves function by inserting a rectangular gate or wedge into the path of flowing liquid. They work through a threaded stem connecting the actuator (handwheel or motor) to the gate. A rising stem makes valve position visible.
Gate valves are generally used to fully shut off or fully open flow in a pipeline — they are not for throttling. A gate valve comprises a body, seat and disc, spindle, gland and a wheel or motor.
Gate valves are best for straight-line flow with minimal restriction. They are used for on/off service on steam, water, oil, air and gas. For regulating flow, they are typically deployed in sizes 6 inches and larger.
