What is an Emergency Shut-Down Valve?

A shutdown valve is an actuated valve intended to stop the flow of a hazardous fluid when a dangerous event is detected, isolating facilities from possible damage to people, equipment or the environment. They are widely used in oil & gas production and are controlled by a high-integrity Emergency Shutdown System (ESDS).

Advantages: rapid action on fire detection, minimal aggravation thanks to reduced/full-bore designs, optional accumulator for fail-safe stroking, position switches for control-room status indication, quarter-turn quick action (typically full-open to full-close in 1–2 seconds per inch of valve size) and clear physical indicators.

In normal operation an ESDV in the fully-open position provides minimal pressure differential. When the setpoint is exceeded the valve closes fully — bubble-tight, often using a double-seated model.

Entellus is a distributor, supplier and stockist of ESDVs from the leading manufacturers.
