Chlorine is a hazardous and toxic material — a greenish-yellow, noncombustible gas with a pungent odour. While noncombustible, it supports combustion of other substances and severely injures on inhalation.
Chlorine service is divided into wet systems (> 150 ppm water) and dry systems. Knowing which determines the materials of construction.
Globe, ball and butterfly valves are all used. Globe valves offer tight bi-directional shut-off. Ball valves provide reliable stem-seal designs; fully-lined ball and butterfly valves with fluoropolymer linings prevent any metal-to-chlorine contact. Selection criteria include stem-seal type, temperature, wet vs dry service, and flashing/cavitation avoidance.
